Shadow of Iran in Middle East: Qassem Suleimani

“Dear General Petraeus, you should know that I, Qassem Suleimani, control the policy for Iran with respect to Iraq, Lebanon, Gaza, and Afghanistan. And indeed, the ambassador in Baghdad is a Quds Force member. The individual who’s going to replace him is a Quds Force member.”

The former president of Iraq Jalal Talabani showed his phone to US commander in Iraq to read this text in a meeting about Shiite issues in 2008. The shadow general of Iran, Qassem Suleimani is on the agenda again because of Trump’s sanctions against Iran in November 2018. The comments and legends about him began to take place in newspapers and magazines so what makes him a “legend” in Middle East Policies?

Suleimani is the commander of Quds Force of IRGC since 1998 so he organized Iran’s policies in the Middle East. His first breaking point was the war against Iraq between 1980-88 thus, he became successful in the front despite his young age, but he became an important figure in Iran with the command of Quds Force, the most respectful military organization in Iran. Then, Suleimani tried to expand Islamic Revolution outside of Iran. The Shiite groups, little armies in Middle East was funded and trained by his forces and with using them he has a Shiite army in all Mashreq. According to Iraqi authorities who spoke to US Baghdad Ambassador, although his Shiite references in Syria and Iraq, His actual motivation in his activities is the Persian Nationalism. Suleimani was the figure that prevents a Kurdistan in Northern Iraq and Syria. The official governments of these countries’ independence were guaranteed by Suleimani so he was the sword of Iran against the Salafi Jihad and divisive organization in Mashreq. Now he is the obstacle against Trump’s and Israel’s policies. His all loyalty has always been to only Ayatollah Khamenei and the Islamic Revolution of Iran, so he was thought and nominated in presidential elections, but he refused these offers.

According to intelligence reports of CIA, he controls Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria at the same time. He was seen in different countries in the same week, so his influence and connections lead him to called as the “shadow general”. Actually, his influence is too much for his rank or figure, but Iran knows very well to use Qassem Suleimani to “protect” Middle East against Americans, Israel, and Saudis. He is called as a crucial general or devil on the earth by the Western authorities, but he was a Rustam or Cyrus for Iranians now. As he said, he will stand against Trump and his sanctions in the Middle East.
